Viega Sanpress: gunmetal press connectors for stainless steel pipe – 12 to 108 mm

Sanpress combines press connectors in gunmetal or silicon bronze with stainless steel pipe 1.4401 or 1.4521 – the economical stainless steel system for the drinking water installation that can be joined to copper and plastic in a mixed installation. This page explains pipe and sizes, what we deliver from stock, the gas variant Sanpress G, the media assignment and how it differs from the all-stainless system Sanpress Inox and from Sanha NiroSan.

What Sanpress is meant for

Sanpress is the system for drinking water installations where stainless steel pipe is required but the connector need not be stainless steel: gunmetal and silicon bronze are low in lead, hydraulically favourable and combine well with other materials. Viega names drinking water as the application; the media list additionally approves heating and cooling water, oil-free compressed air, technical gases, fire-fighting water and treated water – each within the limits of the table below. Fuel gases go only with the G variant; steam and oil belong to Sanpress Inox with FKM.

The advantage over the all-stainless system Sanpress Inox lies in the price of the connectors and the flexibility of the mixed installation; the advantage of Sanpress Inox is the all-stainless execution where gunmetal is unwanted (special media, high hygiene requirements).

How the joint works

As with all Viega metal systems: cut the pipe to length, deburr, mark the insertion depth, insert, press. The gunmetal or silicon bronze connector grips the stainless steel pipe in the bead, the EPDM sealing element seals. For 76.1 to 108 mm press ring and hinged adapter jaw are used.

The press connector carries the SC-Contur: in the unpressed state the joint is necessarily leaking during the leak test (wet 1.0–6.5 bar, dry 22 mbar–3.0 bar). A forgotten press operation therefore shows up before the installation goes into operation – provided it is tested. How the principle works is explained on the overview page and under leak testing and SC-Contur.

Pipe, sizes and availability

The Sanpress pipe comes in two materials: 1.4401 (austenitic, standard) and 1.4521 (ferritic, molybdenum-alloyed, nickel-free). Both are approved for drinking water to DVGW GW 541 and apply to Sanpress and Sanpress Inox – the pipe is the same, only the connector distinguishes the systems. Sanpress and Sanpress G

  • Sanpress (EPDM, green dot): drinking water, heating/cooling, special media after the media list. 12–108 mm.
  • Sanpress G (HNBR, yellow marking): natural gas and LPG to DVGW G 260 with MOP 5, technical gases; DVGW G 5614, TRGI. Not for drinking water. 12–108 mm, pipe 1.4401. From stock.

For higher temperatures (district heating, low-pressure steam) and oils Viega provides for the change to Sanpress Inox with FKM sealing element; with Sanpress itself the on-site replacement of EPDM by FKM outside the drinking water installation is possible after consultation.

Mixed installation: copper, plastic, thread, flange

Sanpress is expressly meant for mixed installation: the gunmetal connectors are the same as for Profipress; transitions to copper pipe, to Raxofix and other multilayer systems, to thread to EN 10226-1 and to flanges belong to the range. The flow rule in drinking water must be observed (the less noble material upstream of the more noble one) – stainless steel downstream of copper is uncritical, copper downstream of galvanised steel is not. Details under mixed installation and corrosion.

Sanpress, Sanpress Inox or NiroSan?

Sanpress Inox is the all-stainless system (connectors 1.4401) on the same pipe – the choice for special media, industry and wherever gunmetal is not wanted. Sanha NiroSan is Sanha's stainless steel press system (connectors 1.4404, pipes 1.4404/1.4521 up to 168.3 mm) with its own profile; we stock both stainless steel systems, they are not mixed. For the heating circuit without drinking water approval Temponox is the more economical stainless steel alternative.

Installation in brief

  • Cut stainless steel pipe with a pipe cutter, deburr – no cutting disc, no contamination by carbon steel tools.
  • Mark the insertion depth, push the connector on up to the stop, press with Viega press jaw (12–54 mm) or press ring (76.1–108 mm).
  • Leak test wet or dry, record; plan fixed and sliding points for the thermal expansion of stainless steel.
  • Pipe clamps with sound insulation insert; no contact corrosion from galvanised clamps without insert.

Frequently asked questions about Viega Sanpress

What is the difference between Sanpress and Sanpress Inox?

The pipe is the same (stainless steel 1.4401 or 1.4521). With Sanpress the connectors are gunmetal or silicon bronze, with Sanpress Inox stainless steel 1.4401. Sanpress is more economical and meant for mixed installation, Sanpress Inox is the all-stainless system for special media and industry.

Can I press Sanpress connectors onto copper pipe?

The gunmetal connectors are identical with Profipress and approved for copper pipe to EN 1057. Transitions between copper and stainless steel pipe are made with them; the flow rule applies.

Which pipe is better for drinking water, 1.4401 or 1.4521?

Both are approved to DVGW GW 541. 1.4521 is ferritic and nickel-free, with high resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking; 1.4401 is the austenitic standard. For special media and gas Viega approves per material – observe the media list.

Up to how many bar does Sanpress go?

Drinking water 10 bar (DIN 1988-200), heating and closed cooling circuits 16 bar at 105 °C, technical gases 16 bar up to 54 mm and 10 bar from 64 mm (manufacturer statements).

Is Sanpress approved for natural gas?

Only as Sanpress G with HNBR sealing element (DVGW G 5614, gas to G 260, MOP 5). The standard system with EPDM is not.
