Viega Temponox: stainless steel for heating and cooling – 15 to 108 mm

Temponox is the stainless steel system for the closed circuit: press connectors in 1.4301 on a ferritic system pipe 1.4520, EPDM sealing element, SC-Contur, brown marking. It brings the corrosion resistance of stainless steel to heating, cooling, compressed air and technical gases – without the price of a drinking water approval that nobody needs there. This page explains pipe, sizes, availability, media, transitions and how it differs from Sanpress Inox, Prestabo and SANHA-Therm.

What Temponox is meant for – and what it is not

Closed heating and cooling installations in housing, commercial and industrial buildings: risers, floor distribution, boiler connection, chillers, plus oil-free compressed air and technical gases after the media list. Temponox is insensitive to external corrosion by moisture – unlike galvanised steel – and stays so from storage to the ceiling penetration. It is not meant for drinking water: connector and pipe carry the brown marking, the pipe 1.4520 has no DVGW drinking water approval. Whoever might later want to convert a line to drinking water takes Sanpress Inox.

How the joint works

As with all Viega metal systems with SC-Contur: cut to length, deburr, mark the insertion depth, push on, press – 15 to 54 mm with press jaw, 76.1 to 108 mm with press ring and hinged adapter jaw. Temponox uses the same Viega tools as Profipress, Sanpress and Sanpress Inox.

The press connector carries the SC-Contur: in the unpressed state the joint is necessarily leaking during the leak test (wet 1.0–6.5 bar, dry 22 mbar–3.0 bar). A forgotten press operation therefore shows up before the installation goes into operation – provided it is tested. How the principle works is explained on the overview page and under leak testing and SC-Contur.

Pipe, sizes and availability

The Temponox pipe in 1.4520 is a ferritic chromium steel: nickel-free, more economical than 1.4401, magnetic, with lower thermal expansion than austenitic stainless steel – an advantage for fixed and sliding points in the heating circuit. It is approved for Temponox only; Sanpress pipe 1.4401/1.4521 can be pressed with Temponox connectors, Profipress copper connectors on Temponox pipe only with a corrosion protection tape at the joint (media list). Which medium with which sealing element

Assignment after the Viega media list (11/2025): heating water to DIN EN 12828 up to 105 °C / 16 bar, cooling water with antifreeze agents per product approval, oil-free compressed air (residual oil below 25 mg/m³) up to 60 °C / 16 bar, technical gases 16 bar up to 54 mm and 10 bar from 64 mm, treated water. For higher temperatures (local/district heating) the on-site change to FKM after consultation is provided for.

Transitions and fire protection

Flanged and threaded transitions, transitions to Sanpress and Sanpress Inox and to multilayer systems belong to the range; the transition to galvanised steel (Prestabo, SANHA-Therm, threaded pipe) requires an insulating union. For ceiling penetrations Viega offers Temponox solutions for zero clearance under the fire protection rules – one reason why the system is widespread in commercial building.

Temponox, Sanpress Inox, Prestabo or SANHA-Therm?

Sanpress Inox is the drinking-water-capable stainless steel variant (connectors 1.4401, pipe 1.4401/1.4521) – more expensive, but without restriction. Prestabo is Viega's heating system in galvanised steel with the same profile; we do not carry it, because SANHA-Therm (galvanised carbon steel, EPDM, 12–108 mm, own profile) covers the same task and is available from us to order. The decision stainless steel versus galvanised steel is a question of the environment: damp rooms, cooling lines with condensation and industrial atmosphere speak for Temponox.

Installation in brief

  • Cut with pipe cutter, deburr, no cutting disc, no carbon steel tools.
  • Mark the insertion depth, push on, press; XL with press ring.
  • Leak test, record; fill the installation after VDI 2035.
  • Take the brown marking seriously on site: Temponox connectors never belong in a drinking water line.

Frequently asked questions about Viega Temponox

Why must Temponox not be used for drinking water?

Because pipe 1.4520 and connector 1.4301 have no DVGW drinking water approval – the system is designed for closed circuits and marked brown. For drinking water: Sanpress, Sanpress Inox, Profipress or NiroSan.

Can I press Sanpress pipe with Temponox connectors?

Yes, Sanpress pipe 1.4401 and 1.4521 is approved with Temponox connectors. Conversely Temponox pipe is intended for Temponox connectors only; copper connectors on it need a corrosion protection tape.

Does Temponox work with glycol in the cooling circuit?

Yes, with antifreeze and corrosion inhibitors after the media list (approval per product, e.g. ethylene and propylene glycol), up to 16 bar and −25 to 105 °C.

Up to how many degrees does Temponox go?

With EPDM up to 105 °C at 16 bar (heating to DIN EN 12828). For local/district heating with higher temperatures change to FKM after consulting Viega.

Do my Sanpress jaws fit?

Yes – same SC-Contur, same Viega press jaws and press rings as Profipress, Sanpress and Sanpress Inox.
