Viega Profipress: press connectors for copper pipe – 12 to 64 mm

Profipress is the copper press system for the complete drinking water and heating installation: copper pipe to EN 1057, press connectors in copper, gunmetal or silicon bronze, EPDM sealing element with green dot and SC-Contur. This page explains which pipe belongs to it, which sizes we carry from stock, what the variants G and S do, which media go with which sealing element and where Profipress connects to Sanpress, flange and thread.

What Profipress is meant for – and what it is not

Profipress covers the drinking water installation from the riser to the draw-off point and likewise closed heating and cooling circuits – in new builds as in refurbishment, where copper pipe is already in place. For special media (technical gases, oil-free compressed air, treated water) the manufacturer's media list applies. The standard system with EPDM is not meant for fuel gases, heating oil, mineral oil and steam: for those there are the variants Profipress G (HNBR) and Profipress S (FKM), which are separated not by the sealing element alone but by marking and approval.

The green dot on the connector stands for the drinking water approval (DVGW W 534). That is more than a colour code: on site it separates the drinking water system from the heating and industrial systems with different marking – one of the most frequent mistakes in practice is fitting a heating system into the drinking water line.

How the joint works

The pipe is cut to length, deburred, the insertion depth is marked and the pipe is pushed into the connector up to the stop; the press jaw deforms connector and pipe in the bead, the EPDM sealing element seals, the deformation holds. Copper pipe in the tempers soft, half-hard and hard is approved; with soft pipe no support sleeve is needed, because the connector grips the pipe in the bead with a positive fit.

The press connector carries the SC-Contur: in the unpressed state the joint is necessarily leaking during the leak test (wet 1.0–6.5 bar, dry 22 mbar–3.0 bar). A forgotten press operation therefore shows up before the installation goes into operation – provided it is tested. How the principle works is explained on the overview page and under leak testing and SC-Contur.

Pipe, sizes and availability

Profipress presses onto copper pipe to EN 1057 – the pipe we carry in stock as copper pipe, with dimension table and tempers. Sizes from 12 to 54 mm are pressed with press jaws, 64 mm with press ring and hinged adapter jaw. The table shows what we deliver from stock:

Profipress, Profipress G and Profipress S – the family at a glance

  • Profipress (EPDM, green dot): drinking water, heating/cooling, special media after the media list. 12–64 mm. From stock.
  • Profipress G (HNBR, yellow marking): natural gas and LPG to DVGW G 260 with MOP 5 (0.5 MPa), hydrogen, technical gases; heating oil and diesel after approval per application; DVGW G 5614, TRGI, with HTB requirement (higher thermal resistance) max. 0.1 MPa. Not for drinking water. 12–64 mm. From stock.
  • Profipress S (FKM): solar installations with evacuated tube collectors, district heating up to 140 °C, low-pressure steam up to 120 °C / 0.1 MPa, compressed air with oil. Not for drinking water. 12–35 mm. Available on request.

The three variants share profile and tool (SC-Contur, Viega press jaws), but not the components: a G connector belongs in the gas line, an S connector in the solar circuit. The sealing element is fitted at the factory; for Profipress outside the drinking water installation Viega provides for replacing EPDM by FKM on site – only after consulting the manufacturer.

Which medium with which sealing element

The assignment follows the Viega media list (edition 11/2025) and the planning manual. Limits apply per medium – drinking water to DIN 1988-200 with 80 °C and 10 bar, heating to DIN EN 12828 with 105 °C and 16 bar, technical gases with 16 bar up to 54 mm and 10 bar from 64 mm. The system finder calculates with these value pairs.

“Conditionally” means: only with the sealing element named in the media list or after consulting Viega – for instance antifreeze agents, whose approval applies per product, or compressed air with an oil content. The binding approval stays with the manufacturer.

Transitions: Sanpress, thread, flange, multilayer

Profipress can be combined with Sanpress and Sanpress Inox – Viega approves the systems for each other, and the connectors in gunmetal or silicon bronze join copper pipe to stainless steel pipe; in drinking water the flow rule must be observed (copper upstream of stainless steel in the direction of flow is uncritical, see mixed installation). Transitions with female or male thread to EN 10226-1 lead to valves and threaded fittings, flange transitions to the flange system, adapters to Raxofix and other multilayer systems on the floor level.

What Profipress is not: Sanpress, Sanha-Press and the heating systems

Sanpress uses the same gunmetal and silicon bronze connectors, but stainless steel pipe 1.4401/1.4521 – the choice between the two is a question of the pipe material (copper or stainless steel), not of the connector. SANHA-Press is Sanha's copper press system with fittings in copper (Cu-DHP) and the variants Gas and Solar; it has its own profile (SA, V, M) and cannot be mixed with Profipress – we carry it to order. Temponox and Prestabo are heating systems without drinking water approval; whoever uses Profipress in the heating circuit pays for a drinking water approval that is not needed there – in residential building that is often sensible all the same, because one system suffices for both (see From our practice).

Installation in brief

  • Cut the pipe square, deburr inside and outside; mark and check the insertion depth.
  • Check the sealing element for seating and damage, insert the pipe up to the stop.
  • Press with an approved Viega press machine and press jaw (12–54 mm) or press ring with hinged adapter jaw (64 mm); never use other manufacturers' profiles.
  • Leak test wet or dry after the ZVSHK guideline, file the record – the SC-Contur shows unpressed joints only when testing.
  • Keep the minimum distances between connectors and to the bend after the instructions for use; do not bend the pipe in the press area.

Frequently asked questions about Viega Profipress

Can I press Profipress onto soft copper pipe?

Yes. Copper pipe to EN 1057 is approved in all tempers; a support sleeve is not required. The pipe must be round, undamaged and cut square in the press area.

May I combine Profipress connectors with Sanpress pipe?

Yes – Viega approves Profipress and Sanpress for each other; the gunmetal and silicon bronze connectors are the same in both systems. Copper connectors (Profipress copper) on stainless steel pipe may be used in drinking water only with regard to the flow rule; on Temponox pipe a corrosion protection tape is prescribed.

Is Profipress approved for natural gas?

Only as Profipress G with HNBR sealing element and yellow marking: DVGW G 5614 for gas to G 260 with MOP 5, plus LPG, hydrogen and technical gases. The standard system with EPDM is not approved for fuel gases.

Up to how many degrees does Profipress go in the heating circuit?

With EPDM up to 105 °C at 16 bar to DIN EN 12828 (manufacturer statement). District heating with direct connection or low-pressure steam needs Profipress S with FKM up to 140 °C.

How do I recognise a forgotten press operation?

By the leak test: thanks to the SC-Contur an unpressed connector is necessarily leaking within the test range. The joint is pressed afterwards; dismantling is not necessary.

Which press machine do I need?

A system press machine approved by Viega for Profipress with Viega press jaws (12–54 mm) and press ring with hinged adapter jaw (64 mm). Jaws of other systems or manufacturers are not permitted even if the profile looks the same – see press profiles and tools.
