Joining methods compared: press, push-fit, grooved coupling, welding, thread, flange and soldering

A pipe joint is rarely chosen for its strength – all seven methods hold when they are executed correctly. It is chosen for what it demands on site and what it allows in operation: does it need flame and fire watch? A qualified welder or a briefing? How is it tested and documented? Up to which size does it go, and can the joint be opened again later? This matrix answers that for seven methods by ten criteria – and says for every statement whether it comes from the manufacturer, from a code or from our experience in trade.

How to read the matrix

Every cell names, beside the statement, its origin. Manufacturer statement means: this is how it stands in the instructions for use, the data sheet or the brochure of the named manufacturer – including the advertising claims, which are marked as such (“up to 60 %”). Code means: the statement follows from a standard, a DVGW worksheet or a regulation named in the cell. Zickwolff experience means: this is how we see it in trade with installers, plant constructors and maintenance people; these cells were confirmed by our colleague review before they appear here. Cells still under clarification are not shown by the matrix – better a gap than a figure without a source.

The criteria are deliberately not weighted. For maintenance in running operation, “hot work” outweighs everything else; for a process line at 40 bar, “pressure and size” decides before assembly time is even mentioned. Pick two or three methods that come into question for your case and read the criteria in the order that applies to your project.

The seven methods in one paragraph each

  • Press: a connector with sealing element is pressed cold onto the pipe – in seconds, without flame, permanent. System pipe in copper, stainless steel, carbon steel and multilayer up to 108 mm (Viega, Sanha, Geberit), thick-walled steel pipe ⅜–4 inch with Megapress and Heavy Steel Press. The approval covers pipe, connector, sealing element and profile together.
  • Push-fit: the pipe is pushed into the push-fit fitting up to the mark and is held by grip ring and O-ring – without press tool. With us GF iFIT for polybutene and multilayer pipe d16–d32, the installation sizes of floor and connection lines.
  • Grooved / coupling: a groove is rolled or cut into the pipe end; a two-piece coupling housing with a C-shaped gasket engages the groove and is bolted. Detachable, reusable, with expansion and angular accommodation on flexible couplings; ¾–24 inch and more (Victaulic). From DN 65 the direct competitor to Megapress XL, flange and weld seam; the standard in sprinkler construction.
  • Welding: a metallurgical bond, without sealing element, in every size, wall thickness, pressure and temperature rating – the joint of pipeline construction with elbows, tees and reducers to EN 10253. Requires qualified welders, procedure qualification, weld testing and, in existing buildings, fire-protection measures.
  • Thread: Whitworth pipe thread to EN 10226-1 with malleable-iron fittings to EN 10242 or stainless threaded fittings, sealing on the thread with hemp, PTFE tape or sealing paste. Detachable with renewal of the sealant; economical up to DN 50, laborious above.
  • Flange: weld-neck flange, loose flange with collar or press flange to EN 1092-1, gasket to EN 1514, bolts tightened crosswise to EN 1591-4. Detachable, the standard at valves, pumps and apparatus from DN 10 to DN 4000 – everything else in the flange guide.
  • Soldering: copper pipe with capillary solder fittings, soft (sanitary) or hard (gas, larger sizes), to the applicable rules of technology. Hot work with an open flame; largely replaced by pressing in new construction, still common in existing buildings and in repair.

From comparison to figure

The matrix says what a method demands; what it costs depends on your project: number of joints, size, hourly rate, ancillary work, downtime. The cost comparison calculator takes the chosen methods and calculates assembly time, cost and downtime with your inputs – a model, not an offer. For the most frequent question in pipeline construction there is a page of its own: Megapress or welding.

For every method the components from one source

Press connectors, push-fit fittings, grooved couplings, butt-welding fittings, threaded fittings, flanges and gaskets – and the pipe to go with them. Tell us method, size, material and medium; we come back with availability, from stock or to order.
