Case studies

Three cases from our practice, told the way they ran: starting point, task, solution, result. Without names and without quotes – two references with names are at the end.

Case 1
C-parts management for several sites of a technology group
Case 2
project supply for a hydropower plant in North Africa
Case 3
piping parts for the riser and recuperator of a steel and sheet-metal fabricator

Case 1: C-parts management for several sites

Starting point. A globally active technology group in driveline and chassis technology is growing fast, concentrates on its core business and outsources C-parts management to service providers. At several sites in the region, machines are supplied with oil, water, compressed air and refrigerant – and every maintenance job needs flanges, butt-welding fittings, threaded fittings, strainers and shut-off valves, immediately.

Task. Keep more than 500 articles of piping and installation material available at the sites, secure quality and availability, map the internal procedures and maintenance intervals – and also supply the contractors who maintain and repair on behalf of the group.

Solution. A cross-site C-parts management: stocking by maintenance intervals, customer-specific parts included, uniform makes and identical lengths so that spare parts are replaced 1:1. Pipes are cleaned and capped before delivery so that no dirt particles damage valves or pumps. The contractors draw from the same stock.

Result. Shorter downtimes because the right part is there; less handling effort because one supplier carries the task; a single set of makes in the plant. How C-parts management works.

Case 2: project supply for a hydropower plant

Starting point. An international plant builder is constructing a hydropower plant in North Africa with eight bulb turbines, generators, electrical and hydromechanical equipment – including the piping material and the locks. The parts have to be 100 percent reliable on site: reordering means weeks at sea.

Task. 2 400 items in 200 lines, over 47 tonnes: deliver, mark, pack, schedule – so that the fitters on site assign every part to the right line, and with the inspection certificates per line.

Solution. The cooperation starts in the planning phase with the engineering department, logistics and project management of the plant builder: check the parts list, define certificates, align material requirements. Then the execution: packing lists, marking and labelling of every part, scheduling of the transport, seaworthy packaging. Plus certificate management – the inspection certificates provided and assigned per line.

Result. Arrival exactly on schedule, trouble-free assignment on site, documentation that holds up at acceptance. Project supply, packaging and marking, certificates.

Case 3: piping parts for riser and recuperator

Starting point. A medium-sized steel and sheet-metal fabricator from the region, a family business in its third generation, manufactures recuperators and risers for international customers – quality is its export argument, and its suppliers have to support it.

Task. For a multi-part riser going to China, flanges to drawing and the matching pipes; for the recuperator of a cupola furnace, material in the required grade.

Solution. We deliver the individual parts – flanges to drawing, the matching pipes, the standard material – with assigned certificates and in step with the customer’s production schedule. The customer does the welding and fabrication itself; that is its craft, ours is the material.

Result. A supplier that carries the quality requirement of the export customer; parts to drawing and pipes that fit the schedule. Processing and parts to drawing.

What follows from the cases for your project

All three cases start the same way: with a list and a conversation before the first part is ordered. The earlier we are involved in planning, the more we can take over – standards check, certificate definition, marking logic, packaging. And all three end with documentation that is the parts list next time.

References with names

Two structures by name: the Chiapas water ride at Phantasialand in Brühl was built with pipes from Zickwolff; we delivered pipes and connecting material fully prefabricated for the construction. In the MEWA ARENA in Mainz (Coface Arena during construction, later Opel Arena), built from 2009 and in use since 2011, pipes from Zickwolff are installed. Plus one project without an order: we donated the ball valves and fittings for a forest-fire fighting module of @fire – Internationaler Katastrophenschutz Deutschland e. V.

Frequently asked questions

Which projects has Zickwolff already supplied?

For example the Chiapas ride at Phantasialand and the MEWA ARENA Mainz - the case studies show what was supplied and how.

May I name you as a reference?

Gladly – and conversely we ask you before we talk about a project.

Are there cases from my industry?

Probably: more than 1 000 customers buy from us regularly – from plant construction, industry, energy, chemicals, water, automotive, mechanical engineering, food and pharma. Ask us.

Are the figures real?

Yes, they come from the project records and our customer magazine. Names and quotes we leave out.
