Scope: sizes, classes, grades

NPS 1/8 to 48 in the schedules of B36.10M. Grades A, B and C by strength: Grade B (the usual one) tensile min. 415 MPa (60 ksi), yield min. 240 MPa (35 ksi), carbon max. 0.30 %. Grade A softer (330/205 MPa), Grade C stronger (485/275 MPa). Tolerances: wall min. −12.5 %. No impact requirement – below −29 °C use A333.

Product form

Seamless pipe, hot-finished or cold-drawn.

A106 Grade B is compared with P265GH, Grade A with P235GH to EN 10216-2 – by strength, not by analysis. Dual-certified pipe (A106 B / A53 B / API 5L B) is common.

Use in Europe: the Pressure Equipment Directive

Under the Pressure Equipment Directive an ASTM material has no presumption of conformity: it needs a European material approval or a particular material appraisal (PMA) by the equipment manufacturer, in categories III and IV assessed by the notified body. Comparisons with EN grades are orientation, never a one-to-one equivalence – chemistry bands, test scope and certificate differ. Sizes are NPS and schedule, EN sizes outside diameter × wall – a schedule wall rarely equals an EN wall.

Marking on the part

Stencilled on the pipe: manufacturer, A106 (often together with A53 and API 5L), grade, NPS and schedule, heat number, test marks (hydro or NDE), length, S for supplementary requirements.

Frequently asked questions about ASTM A106/A106M

Can I use this ASTM material in a pressure line under the PED?

Yes, but without presumption of conformity: the equipment manufacturer needs a European material approval or a particular material appraisal (PMA), in categories III and IV assessed by the notified body. For equipment under Article 4(3) (sound engineering practice) this does not apply. We supply the material with certificate 3.1 – the appraisal is the manufacturer's.

Must a plant with ASME parts be inspected more often?

No – the inspection interval comes from the operating law of the country, not from the code of the part. In Germany the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (Annex 2 Section 4) sets maximum intervals, the operator fixes the interval in the risk assessment and the inspector may shorten it (TRBS 1201 Part 2) where design or manufacture give reason to. Operators often inspect more frequently anyway. This is general information, not legal advice – the legal text is binding.

A106 or A53?

A106 is seamless only, killed steel and meant for elevated temperature – A53 also covers welded pipe. Much pipe is dual-certified A106 B / A53 B / API 5L B.

Is A106 Gr. B the same as P265GH?

Comparable by strength (415/240 MPa), not identical: analysis bands and test scope differ, and P265GH carries the PED presumption of conformity, A106 does not.
