ASME B36.10M: Welded and seamless wrought steel pipe

The dimension standard of the inch pipe world: nominal pipe size (NPS), outside diameter and the schedule wall thicknesses for carbon, alloy and ferritic stainless steel pipe. It defines no steel – that is the job of A106, A333, A335 or API 5L.

Scope: sizes, classes, grades

NPS 1/8 to 80. Schedules 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160 plus STD, XS and XXS. Up to NPS 10 STD equals Sch 40 and XS equals Sch 80, from NPS 12 they diverge (STD stays 9.53 mm, XS 12.70 mm). Up to NPS 12 the outside diameter is larger than the nominal size, from NPS 14 NPS equals the outside diameter in inches.

Product form

Dimension standard for pipe – materials, tolerances and testing come from the ASTM pipe specification (A530/A999 tolerances: wall −12.5 %).

The European counterpart – and the limits of the comparison

EN 10220 is the European dimension standard (outside diameter × wall in mm, series 1 to 3), EN 10216 and EN 10217 are the delivery standards for seamless and welded pipe.

Most outside diameters coincide (60.3, 88.9, 114.3, 219.1 mm), four do not (26.7/26.9, 33.4/33.7, 42.2/42.4, 323.8/323.9 mm). The wall series are different systems: a schedule wall rarely equals an EN series wall, so a fitting wall must be matched, not assumed. Pipe weights in B36.10M are for carbon steel.

“To ASME” means three different things Dimensions to an ASME standard with a European material, dimensions plus an ASTM material, or a whole line designed to ASME B31. Under the Pressure Equipment Directive and the operating law these are not the same case – and the stamp on the part says nothing about the later inspection regime.

Marking on the part

Pipe is stencilled by the material specification: manufacturer, specification (e.g. A106 Gr. B), NPS and schedule, heat number, test marks, length – B36.10M itself prescribes no marking.

At Zickwolff

Black steel pipe in A106 Gr. B and low-temperature pipe in A333 Gr. 6 to the schedules of B36.10M are part of our range – from stock or to order, with certificate 3.1. Our pipe dimension tables show the EN sizes – the schedule finder follows.

Dimensions Dimension tables for this standard are available on request – we work from manufacturer catalogues, not from copied standard tables.

Frequently asked questions about ASME B36.10M

What does "to ASME" mean on a part?

Three different things: dimensions to an ASME standard (B16.5, B16.9) with a European material (P265GH), dimensions plus an ASTM material (A105, A234 WPB), or a complete line designed to ASME B31.1/B31.3. Under the PED and the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung these are not the same – the stamp B16.9 says nothing about the later inspection regime.

Why is a 2-inch pipe 60.3 mm?

Because NPS is a name, not a measurement: up to NPS 12 the outside diameter is larger than the nominal size (historically the bore of the thickest wall), from NPS 14 NPS equals the outside diameter in inches. Our rule of thumb "DN is not a diameter" explains the same for EN.

Is Schedule 40 the same as STD?

Only up to NPS 10. From NPS 12 STD stays at 9.53 mm while Sch 40 grows – the same for XS (12.70 mm) and Sch 80. See our rule of thumb "Schedule is not a wall thickness".
