Standards in piping: DIN, EN, ISO – and what became of the old DIN numbers

Old drawings say DIN 2632, the delivery note says EN 1092-1 – and often both mean, functionally, the same welding neck flange. This page explains how the standards system of DIN, EN and ISO fits together, what the prefixes mean and which European standard replaced the old DIN standards of our range: as a look-up table from pipes and fittings to flanges, threaded fittings and inspection documents.

Three levels, one system: DIN, CEN/EN and ISO

Technical standardisation today takes place on three levels: national (in Germany DIN, founded in 1917, since the standards agreement of 1975 the recognised German standards body), European (CEN, the European Committee for Standardization) and international (ISO). Electrical engineering has parallel organisations (DKE, CENELEC, IEC) – for piping material the line ISO – CEN – DIN is what counts.

The decisive mechanism is the obligation to adopt: an adopted European Standard (EN) must be taken over unchanged into the national body of standards by all CEN members – in Germany as DIN EN. Conflicting national standards have to be withdrawn. That is exactly how the old DIN standards of piping have been replaced by EN standards since the 1990s: not by prohibition, but by orderly replacement. For many common series the essential connection dimensions were carried forward – interchangeability is therefore often given, but has to be checked for the specific part by type, DN, PN, sealing face, bolt pattern, material and service conditions.

So that the same standard is not developed twice, the Vienna Agreement (1991) governs the cooperation between ISO and CEN: a standards project is led on one level and voted on in parallel – the result then applies on all three levels and is called, for example, DIN EN ISO 1127.

The number itself is a plain serial number without any system. What matters in practice: when a standard is adopted, the EN/ISO number stays the same everywhere – only the country prefix changes (DIN EN, BS EN, NF EN …). And the date of issue is part of the standard: EN 1092-1:2018 can differ in detail from the 2008 edition.

National DIN standards without a direct EN replacement

Not every DIN standard was replaced at European level. Where no EN counterpart exists, the national standard remains in force and is maintained nationally where necessary – in our range above all:

And internationally? ASME, JIS, GOST

Outside Europe, other standards worlds apply. In the USA, ANSI accredits the standards work of the professional bodies – for piping components above all ASME (the B16 series for flanges and fittings, B31 for piping) and ASTM (materials). When people speak of an “ANSI flange”, they almost always mean ASME B16.5 – our page EN 1092-1 vs ASME B16.5 shows the direct comparison of the two systems. In Japan the JIS standards assign each field a letter (JIS B 2220: flanges). The Russian-influenced GOST world can matter above all in projects related to the states of the Eurasian Economic Union. The most important rule of practice for all systems: similar numbers or nominal sizes never mean identical dimensions – NPT is not Rp, Class is not PN.

Frequently asked questions about standards and their replacement

What does the “EN” in DIN EN 1092-1 mean?

EN stands for European Standard: the content was adopted at European level (CEN) and must be taken over unchanged by all member countries. DIN EN 1092-1 is therefore the German version of EN 1092-1 – with the same technical content as the British BS EN or the French NF EN. That is why flanges to EN 1092-1 fit together across Europe – provided type, DN, PN, sealing face form and material also match.

Does an old DIN standard still apply if there is a DIN EN successor?

No. When a European Standard is adopted, conflicting national standards have to be withdrawn – the old DIN is then withdrawn (no longer part of the current body of standards), and its content lives on in the EN successor. In the trade, however, the old numbers remain in use (for example “threaded pipe DIN 2440”), and existing plants were built to them. Important: some DIN standards without an EN counterpart remain in force as national standards and are revised nationally where necessary – for example DIN 28011 (torispherical heads, last 2012), DIN 3567 (pipe clamps) and DIN 3570 (U-bolts).

Is a DIN EN ISO standardised three times over?

It is a single standard text that applies on three levels: international (ISO), European (EN) and national (DIN). This is made possible by the Vienna Agreement of 1991 between ISO and CEN – the standard is developed only once and voted on in parallel. An example from our range is DIN EN ISO 1127 for stainless steel tube dimensions.

What does the “E” in front of a standard designation mean, for example E DIN EN 10255?

The E marks a draft standard published for public comment. A draft is not yet a valid standard – the current edition without the E remains binding until the draft is accepted and published as the new edition.

My old part carries an old DIN marking – what do I order today?

Usually the part to the EN successor standard from our replacement table: a flange to DIN 2632 corresponds today to a welding neck flange type 11 to EN 1092-1 in PN 10, an elbow to DIN 2605-1 to a type A to EN 10253-2. The essential connection dimensions were mostly carried forward in the changeover; we check interchangeability in the individual case when we quote (type, DN, PN, sealing face, material). If marking or assignment are unclear, send us photos and dimensions – we propose the matching current part without obligation.
