Scope: sizes, classes, grades

No grade subdivision. Tensile strength min. 485 MPa (70 ksi), yield min. 250 MPa (36 ksi), elongation min. 22 %, reduction of area min. 30 %, hardness max. 187 HBW. Design temperature in piping practice about −29 °C to 425 °C. Normalised delivery is ordered as A105N. No impact test unless ordered – below −29 °C the sister standard A350 applies.

EN 1092-1 places SA-105 in the same material group as P250GH (1.0460, the former C 22.8) and P245GH to EN 10222-2 – in trade A105 and P250GH/P280GH are listed side by side.

Use in Europe: the Pressure Equipment Directive

Under the Pressure Equipment Directive an ASTM material has no presumption of conformity: it needs a European material approval or a particular material appraisal (PMA) by the equipment manufacturer, in categories III and IV assessed by the notified body. Comparisons with EN grades are orientation, never a one-to-one equivalence – chemistry bands, test scope and certificate differ. A105 allows up to 0.35 % carbon, P250GH is a narrower analysis.

Marking on the part

On the flange: manufacturer, NPS, Class, A105 or SA-105 (N for normalised), heat code, B16.5. Forged fittings to B16.11 add the class 2000/3000/6000/9000.

At Zickwolff

A105 flanges to B16.5 are our standard ASME flange – weld neck, slip-on, blind and threaded, from stock or to order, with certificate 3.1 – A105N and impact-tested A350 LF2 on request.

Dimensions Dimension tables for this standard are on our page flange dimensions ASME B16.5. For the weld neck flange there is also a dimensional drawing with tolerances for each class and NPS: weld neck flange ASME B16.5.

Frequently asked questions about ASTM A105/A105M

Can I use this ASTM material in a pressure line under the PED?

Yes, but without presumption of conformity: the equipment manufacturer needs a European material approval or a particular material appraisal (PMA), in categories III and IV assessed by the notified body. For equipment under Article 4(3) (sound engineering practice) this does not apply. We supply the material with certificate 3.1 – the appraisal is the manufacturer's.

Must a plant with ASME parts be inspected more often?

No – the inspection interval comes from the operating law of the country, not from the code of the part. In Germany the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (Annex 2 Section 4) sets maximum intervals, the operator fixes the interval in the risk assessment and the inspector may shorten it (TRBS 1201 Part 2) where design or manufacture give reason to. Operators often inspect more frequently anyway. This is general information, not legal advice – the legal text is binding.

A105 or A350 LF2?

A105 down to −29 °C, A350 LF2 below – same strength, but only LF2 has the impact test at −46 °C on the certificate.

What is A105N?

A105 delivered normalised – a heat treatment ordered as a supplementary requirement, common for flanges in Europe and marked with N.
