Scope: sizes, classes, grades

NPS 1/8 to 30, Schedules 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. 40S equals Sch 40 and 80S equals Sch 80 only up to NPS 10 (and 40S equals STD, 80S equals XS up to NPS 12). Heavier stainless walls are taken from B36.10M. Steel by A312 (seamless and welded austenitic pipe), A790 for duplex.

The European counterpart – and the limits of the comparison

EN ISO 1127 is the European dimension standard for stainless steel pipe (same outside diameter × wall grid as EN 10220), EN 10216-5 and EN 10217-7 the delivery standards.

Schedule 10S or 40S walls rarely meet an EN ISO 1127 wall – and the weight tables differ by the density factor 1.015 for stainless steel. TP316L is not automatically 1.4404: manufacturers assign it to 1.4404, 1.4435 or 1.4436 depending on analysis.

“To ASME” means three different things Dimensions to an ASME standard with a European material, dimensions plus an ASTM material, or a whole line designed to ASME B31. Under the Pressure Equipment Directive and the operating law these are not the same case – and the stamp on the part says nothing about the later inspection regime.

Marking on the part

Stainless pipe is marked to A312/A530: manufacturer, specification and grade (TP316L), seamless or welded, NPS and schedule, heat number.

Frequently asked questions about ASME B36.19M

What does "to ASME" mean on a part?

Three different things: dimensions to an ASME standard (B16.5, B16.9) with a European material (P265GH), dimensions plus an ASTM material (A105, A234 WPB), or a complete line designed to ASME B31.1/B31.3. Under the PED and the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung these are not the same – the stamp B16.9 says nothing about the later inspection regime.

What does the S in 10S mean?

Stainless: the S schedules of B36.19M are the thin walls of stainless pipe. 40S equals Sch 40 only up to NPS 10 – from NPS 12 40S stays at 9.53 mm.

Is TP316L the same as 1.4404?

Same alloy type, not the same standard: depending on analysis a heat is certified 1.4404, 1.4435 or 1.4436. Many mills certify both – read the certificate.
