DN is not a diameter – why DN 50 never measures 50 mm

DN is a nominal size – not a measurement.

Rule of thumb

DN 50 means "size 50", not "50 mm inside" and not "50 mm outside".

Where does the rule come from?

The nominal size was introduced so that pipes, flanges, fittings and valves from different manufacturers fit together: whoever orders "DN 50" receives parts that mate – without knowing the inside diameter, which varies with wall thickness. The number is loosely based on the inside diameter in millimetres, which is why it is read as a dimension in daily work. It has deliberately remained a rounded designation, precisely because the real bore depends on the wall thickness.

What is technically correct?

DN (diamètre nominal, EN ISO 6708) is an alphanumeric designation without unit. In the EN world each DN has one outside diameter (EN 10220): DN 50 → 60.3 mm, DN 100 → 114.3 mm, DN 25 → 33.7 mm. The inside diameter follows from the chosen wall thickness and is never the DN number: pipe 60.3 × 2.9 has a bore of 54.5 mm, 60.3 × 3.6 has 53.1 mm, 60.3 × 4.0 has 52.3 mm. A steel pipe is therefore ordered as outside diameter × wall thickness, not as DN. DN is needed for what attaches to the pipe: the flange DN 50 PN 16 fits all three pipes because its hub is made for 60.3 mm.

Where does the rule end?

  • The DN → outside diameter assignment applies per pipe standard. At DN 100 the old dimension 108.0 mm from DIN 2448 still lives alongside 114.3 mm (EN 10220); flanges exist for both bores ("DN 100/108" and "DN 100/114.3"). Saying only "DN 100" leaves the flange bore undefined.
  • For plastic pipes (e.g. PVC-U, PE) the outside dimension is called d and is itself a dimension in mm: d 63 is 63 mm outside – and corresponds to DN 50. Only the system's correspondence table helps here.
  • Threaded pipes to EN 10255 additionally carry the inch designation of the thread (R 2 for DN 50 on 60.3 mm) – not a diameter either.
  • A DN value on a drawing never replaces the dimension; calculations (flow, strength) need the real inside diameter.

What does the standard say?

EN ISO 6708 defines DN as a designation for piping components that fit together; it is not a dimension and must not be used as one. The preferred DN steps are laid down there (DN 10, 15, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 65, 80, 100, 125, 150, 200 …). EN 10220 specifies the outside diameters and wall thicknesses of steel tubes, EN 1092-1 the connection dimensions of flanges per DN.

DIN/EN versus ASME/ASTM

The American nominal size NPS (Nominal Pipe Size, in inches) is the same principle with the same trap: NPS 2 is 2.375 in = 60.3 mm outside, not 2 in. Up to NPS 12 the inch value matches neither the outside nor the inside diameter; only from NPS 14 is the outside diameter equal to the NPS in inches. The outside diameters of the inch series are practically identical to the EN series (60.3 / 88.9 / 114.3 …), so the correspondence DN 50 ↔ NPS 2 is dimensionally clean – the wall thicknesses are not (see "Schedule is not a wall thickness").

Worked example

Core range: pipe 60.3 × 2.9 EN 10216-2 P235GH (DN 50) and welding neck flange DN 50 PN 16. The pipe bore is 54.5 mm; with a 3.6 mm wall it is 53.1 mm. A pump sizing that assumes "DN 50 = 50 mm" underestimates the cross-section by about 16 per cent (19.6 cm² instead of 23.3 cm² with a 2.9 mm wall) – an error in flow velocity that is later hunted as pressure loss. The other way round at the flange: ordering a "DN 100" flange for a 108.0 mm pipe without stating the bore may deliver the one for 114.3 – with a 6 mm gap.

How many mm is DN 50?

60.3 mm outside (steel pipe to EN 10220). Inside, depending on wall thickness, between about 52 and 55 mm – never 50 mm.

Why does the flange say DN 100 and the pipe 114.3?

Because DN names the size and the pipe names the dimension. They belong together: DN 100 is the nominal size, 114.3 mm the outside diameter of the matching pipe.

Is DN 50 the same as NPS 2?

Dimensionally yes for the outside diameter (60.3 mm); not for wall thicknesses, tolerances and materials.
