Materials compared: DIN, EN designations and ASTM by product form
Material numbers and EN steel names with the old DIN designation – and the ASTM orientation separated by product form. Because in the US system there is no such thing as “the” counterpart material: one and the same EN steel corresponds to different ASTM specifications depending on the product form (pipe, fitting, forging/flange, casting).
Important note on material assignment: ASTM/ASME designations are frequently tied to a specific product form (pipe, fitting, forging, casting). The assignments shown therefore serve technical orientation only and do not imply automatic equivalence or interchangeability. Before an order or a substitution, check product standard, chemical and mechanical requirements, delivery condition, heat treatment, dimension and service conditions.
Why the product form decides
The ASTM system assigns its own specifications per product form: pipes run under A106/A335/A312, for example, butt-welding fittings under A234/A403/A420, forgings and flanges under A105/A182/A350 and cast steel for valves under A216/A217/A351. At a weld the grades have to match – a pipe A335 P22 goes with the fitting A234 WP22 and the flange A182 F22. That is why the following table lists the matching ASTM chain for each EN material.

All entries in the ASTM columns are product-form-specific orientations and not confirmed equivalences – the sign “≈” in every cell is there as a reminder.

How to read: “≈” = orientation by product form, no normatively confirmed equivalence – which is why the sign stands in every ASTM cell. The cast steel column always names cast analogues – separate casting specifications, not identical materials; “*” = cast analogue with a different cast UNS number. Bolts and nuts for the respective chain: standard A193 B7 / A194 2H, low temperature A320 L7, stainless A193 B8/B8M / A194 8/8M. “–” = no customary or no reliable direct assignment.

Notes: for EN-GJS-500-7 there is no unambiguous ASTM counterpart – comparison tables name A 536 70-50-05 or 80-55-06; before a substitution compare mechanical requirements, type of test piece and wall thickness. ASTM A 47 describes ferritic (blackheart) malleable iron and is no direct counterpart of the whiteheart malleable iron EN-GJMW-400-5 – hence no assignment.

What has changed since the earlier edition
For the stainless steels (EN 10088-1), the comparison covers the editions from DIN EN 10088-1:2014-12. Not yet recorded: editions 1995-08 and 2005-09.

The chemical composition of several grades has been changed - for 1.4404 the upper limit for molybdenum has been raised from 2.50 to 3.0 per cent by mass, the lower limit 2.00 and the name X2CrNiMo17-12-2 stayed.

These entries say what the standard has changed. They say nothing about material, pressure rating, scope of testing or the condition of an installed part — and nothing about whether an existing part can continue to be used. That assessment remains with the specific plant.
