Welded stainless steel tubes to EN 10217-7: dimensions, weights and limit deviations

Welded tubes of stainless steels are governed by EN 10217-7. This page carries our dimension overview for them: for every dimension the weight per metre and the two limit deviations that apply to it – and the way there through the dimension finder. The preferred dimensions here do not follow EN 10220 as they do for the non-alloy tube, but EN ISO 1127; that is why some of the diameters differ from those on the neighbouring pages.

Dimension table

Zickwolff dimension table (standard reference EN 10217-7)

One row per dimension, and every row carries everything that belongs to it: wall thickness, weight per metre and both limit deviations. Ø series is the diameter series of EN 10220 – it belongs to the outside diameter, not to the wall thickness.

Five columns are calculated by us, the standard does not list them: the inside diameter as D − 2 × T, the water content as the clear cross-sectional area times one metre, the steel cross-section as the annular area, the weight per 6 m as weight per metre times 6 and the surface as the outer circumference times one metre. All are nominal values without a tolerance of their own – how far they may deviate in a given case follows from the limit deviations for outside diameter and wall thickness.
Standard reference for the limit deviations: EN 10217-7, of the standard. The column per 6 m is a calculation aid and not a commitment on the delivery length; which lengths are customary is stated under Lengths.

1 11 of these dimensions lie outside the preferred dimensions of EN 10220: the standard grades outside diameters and wall thicknesses, and this combination is not part of that grading. It is listed here nevertheless, because it exists. A dash in the Ø series column means that the outside diameter itself is not in the series of EN 10220 either.

What has changed since the earlier edition

For the stainless steel tube, welded, the comparison covers the editions from DIN EN 10217-7:2015-01. Not yet recorded: DIN 17457 and edition 2005-05 (available in-house, deliberately not applied retroactively).

These entries say what the standard has changed. They say nothing about material, pressure rating, scope of testing or the condition of an installed part — and nothing about whether an existing part can continue to be used. That assessment remains with the specific plant.

Lengths

Lengths: what the standard leaves open and what the market supplies

EN 10217-7 does not specify a length. Tubes are supplied in random lengths, whose range is part of the order and is agreed there. Exact lengths with their own limit deviations are possible, but a design that has to be agreed expressly – not the normal case. That is why the drawing on this page carries no length dimension and shows the tube broken off on the right: the length is not a property of the dimension but a matter of the order.

Customary on the market are mostly 6 m, from continuous production up to 18 m. That is the standard length that stockholders and mills supply for tubes of this manufacturing process – welded, stainless, a figure taken from stock programmes, not from the standard. Whoever needs a specific length states it in the inquiry; whoever plans a quantity calculates with it.

The column per 6 m in the tables on this page calculates with 6 m, because that is the round figure within this range. It is a calculation aid and not a commitment: for a different length take the Weight column (kg per m) and multiply yourself.

How the figures are derived

How weight and limit deviations come about

The weight per metre is a calculation, not a table entry: outside diameter and wall thickness give the cross-sectional area of the tube, times the density of steel of 7.85 kg/dm³. We calculate it to EN 10220 for every dimension in this overview – which is why every row shows a figure and nowhere a dash.

A limit deviation is not a property of the row but a figure that refers to the nominal dimension. For the outside diameter the ratio is not the same throughout: it depends on the diameter. The row shows the figure that applies to exactly this dimension. For the wall thickness that is ± 10 % of the nominal dimension, at least ± 0.2 mm. We calculate it for every dimension in this overview, so that the row shows the figure and not a percentage that one would still have to apply oneself.

It is recalculated every time this page is rebuilt, row by row. If one does not add up, the page is not built.

Workmanship

How to measure correctly

A tube is identified by two measurements: outside diameter D and wall thickness T. Measure D with a calliper in two directions at right angles – the difference is the out-of-roundness – and T at the tube end. The inside diameter is not measured but calculated: D minus twice T.

Workmanship and testing: what is not a dimension

Not everything that has to be right about a tube is in the dimension table. How high a weld may stand, how far the strip edges may be offset against each other, how straight it has to be and how round the cross-section has to be – that too is part of the workmanship, and at incoming inspection it helps decide whether a delivery is accepted. Added to this is what can be seen on the delivery: the surface, the delivery condition, the ends, the marking and the protection on the way to site.

Standard reference for these details: EN 10217-7. What is stated here is the requirement – it is measured on the delivered tube, and where a tolerance class or an option comes into play, it belongs in the order.

In practice

From practice: where ordering goes wrong

The delivery condition belongs in the order. The standard carries a set of symbols for heat treatment and surface finish. They decide about appearance and corrosion behaviour more than the material alone does – and they cannot be changed afterwards.

The tolerance class is a specification of its own. With stainless tubes the permissible deviation does not depend on a fixed percentage but on the class in which the tube is ordered. Anyone who needs a closer class names it – otherwise the default class of the standard applies.

With stainless steel the weld is a subject of its own. Whether it is dressed, smoothed or left as welded is stated in the symbols of the delivery condition, and where the medium touches it, that is often the decisive question.

Limits of this page

What this page does not say

  • No material selection. EN 10217-7 carries austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steels – in the trade above all 1.4301, 1.4307, 1.4404 and 1.4571. Which grade suits your case is decided by medium, temperature and corrosion load – not by the dimension. The materials overview puts the grades in context.
  • No design calculation. Diameter and wall thickness do not yield a permissible working pressure. That calculation belongs to plant engineering.
  • Only this one standard. Seamless stainless tubes are covered by EN 10216-5, welded tubes of non-alloy steels by EN 10217-1. The overview is on the page Steel pipes.

What does EN 10217-7 govern?

The standard applies to welded tubes of stainless steels for pressure purposes. Among other things it lays down materials, delivery conditions, limit deviations and test conditions.

How much does one metre of tube weigh?

The weight per metre is shown in this overview for every dimension. It is calculated from outside diameter and wall thickness.

Why are the diameters different from those of the non-alloy tube?

Because the preferred dimensions here follow EN ISO 1127 and not EN 10220. The two series overlap over wide stretches but are not identical.

What does the tolerance class mean?

It determines how far outside diameter and wall thickness may deviate from the nominal dimension. Which class applies is ordered; the dimension overview shows the value that follows from it for the dimension concerned.
