Rule of thumb · applies

A repair clamp is a repair, not a new build – what repair clamps and repair bands may do permanently and what only until the next opportunity

A repair clamp is a repair, not a new build.

A rule of thumb replaces neither the design calculation nor the manufacturer’s instructions.

robust rule
Standards referenced
Manufacturer data Gebo (gebooriginal, gebounifix) and GF PRIMOFIT on service life, medium, pressure and temperature – no product standard for repair clamps – DVGW W 534 only for compression fittings

Rule of thumb

It seals a hole, a crack, a porous spot – on a pipe that is otherwise still sound. It replaces neither a pipe section nor a joint nor the decision whether the line is still a line.

Where does the rule come from?

The manufacturers say it themselves in two steps: malleable-iron repair clamps and stainless repair bands on metal pipe are “suitable for permanent use”; on PE, PVC and multilayer pipe Gebo calls the repair band expressly “for short-term repair” – and only for cold water. GF goes one step further and calls its PRIMOFIT repair and tapping clamps and the pipe-burst band in principle “for temporary sealing of locally limited damage” – permanent there is only the compression joint. The leak stopper in the Gebo catalogue is the third step: gaining minutes on a depressurised line, nothing more.

What is technically correct?

A repair clamp holds as long as the pipe underneath carries it: it needs a smooth surface (Gebo: 7 mm of clearance is enough, but no weld-seam bead, no rust under the sleeve), a round pipe within the clamping range and a damage smaller than the sleeve. Crack, hole, porous spot yes; a break only with the multi-part civil-engineering clamp (gebounifix maxi) and only in cold water; two cracks within twenty centimetres mean a pipe replacement. Permanent means for Gebo: drinking water 25 °C/16 bar, heating 90 °C/6 bar, oil-free compressed air 10 bar – and for every clamp a look at the service limits.

Where does the rule end?

  • Plastic pipe: short-term only, cold water only (manufacturer data) – the clamp bridges until the repair with a compression fitting (polygebo, Primofit) or until the new pipe section.
  • Gas: repair bands with NBR only outside buildings, at lower pressures (middle 4 bar, maxi by diameter) – inside buildings a repair on the gas line is not a clamp question (rule of thumb FR-19).
  • Plastered in: Gebo permits the malleable-iron repair clamp in cold water under plaster, with pressure test – everything else stays accessible.

What does the standard say?

There is no product standard for repair clamps that defines “permanent”; the manufacturer data and the rules of technology for the line apply (drinking water: DVGW worksheets, gas: DVGW G 600/TRGI for domestic installation). The DVGW certification W 534 of the compression fittings (series 151/222) covers the joint, not the clamp.

DIN/EN versus ASME/ASTM

In the ASME world repair clamps are likewise manufacturer products without a product standard; the operator standard (API 570 for in-service piping) treats a clamp as a “temporary repair” that is assessed and scheduled. The attitude is the same: a repair with an expiry date, not a new build.

Worked example

A galvanised cold-water line 1 1/4 inch has a corrosion hole. Repair clamp type DS 42.4 mm, drinking water 25 °C up to 16 bar – permanently permitted, even under plaster with pressure test. The same hole on a 70 °C drinking-water line: there the same clamp carries 6 bar at 90 °C as heating water, for warm drinking water the catalogue names no release – then the brass compression fitting (series 313, 85 °C) with a new pipe section is the repair that stays.

Zickwolff reference

From daily business: repair clamps and repair bands are stock items with us because they are first aid – whoever orders them gets the matching compression fitting for the second aid on request.

Verdict: applies (class A). The rule reproduces the manufacturer steps “permanent”, “short-term” and “emergency”.

Frequently asked questions

May a repair clamp stay in the wall?

Gebo: in cold water yes, with pressure test. For hot water, heating and gas the clamp stays accessible.

How long does a repair band last on a PE pipe?

The manufacturer says “short-term” and cold water only – until the repair with a compression fitting or a pipe section. He names no period; we recommend scheduling the date right away.

Can I seal a pipe break with a clamp?

Only with the multi-part civil-engineering clamp (gebounifix maxi) in cold water; the length follows from damage plus pipe diameter, for PE plus 50 percent. Inside a building a break means a pipe replacement.
