Compression fittings for PE, PP and PVC-C pipe – and the transition from steel to plastic

Plastic pipe can be welded (PE), glued (PVC) or socket-fused (PP) – but not when water keeps running, the pipe marking is missing or simply the time. Then you clamp: with a support sleeve in the pipe that takes the clamping pressure, and a fitting outside. The same fittings make the transition where a PE line meets steel. For large nominal sizes and mixed materials underground there is the wide-range coupling that swallows several outside diameters in one size.

Which solution for which plastic pipe

For PE pipe to DVGW GW 335 and DIN 8074/8075 (PE 80, PE 100, PE-Xa, SDR 11) the malleable-iron compression fitting is the classic service-line solution: series 153/155 (20 to 63 mm) and 22P (75 to 110 mm) with NBR for water, gas outside buildings and compressed air, 156 (32 to 63 mm) and 223 (75 to 90 mm) with EPDM for drinking water (156: DVGW GW 335-B4), as PE–PE coupling or as steel–PE transition. The support sleeve is mandatory and ordered separately. For PP-R/PP-RCT (DIN 8077/8078) and PVC-C (DIN 8079/8080) polygebo is built: brass compression fittings with matching support sleeve per SDR, 16 to 50 mm, repair without glueing or welding, on PVC-C even with water still running. GF PRIMOFIT covers PE (SDR 11 and 17.6) and PE-Xa 20 to 63 mm and brings the support sleeve along. Multilayer pipe is a world of its own – for that Multigebo.

Service limits per medium

Plastic pipe limits the temperature more than the fitting does: malleable iron on PE is released for cold water (NBR series 20 °C, EPDM series 25 °C), polygebo on PP and PVC-C up to 80 °C at 6 bar, GF PRIMOFIT on PE up to 40 °C. Gas via PE service lines with the series approved for it (rule of thumb FR-19).

Wide-range coupling: one fitting, many pipes

Underground, a pipe to standard rarely lies next to another: grey cast iron from 1960 next to ductile iron, steel next to PE, fibre cement in between. The wide-range coupling GF WAGA MULTI/JOINT 3000 Plus clamps with a sealing system of plastic segments on a clamping range of up to 43 mm – DN 100 covers 104 to 132 mm, DN 200 192 to 232 mm. It comes restrained (Uni/Fikser, with grip segments) and non-restrained (Uni/Fleks); on plastic pipe restraint is permitted only with a support sleeve, on GRP and cement-bound pipe not at all. Water 16 bar (25 bar non-restrained), gas 8 bar, −5 to +50 °C, GSK coating, H2-ready certificate for DN 50 to 250. We procure it on request .

What we stock

PE compression fittings of the Gebo series 153/155, 22P, 156/223, the PE versions of GF PRIMOFIT, polygebo and WAGA we procure on request; for steel pipe we stock the GF PRIMOFIT transition pieces to thread (male and female 1/2 to 2 inch) and the PRIMOFIT couplings (range on the steel-pipe page). Support sleeves belong to every PE order – tell us outside diameter and SDR.

Frequently asked questions

Why does PE pipe need a support sleeve?

Because plastic creeps under clamping pressure: without a sleeve the grip ring would constrict the pipe and the joint would loosen over time. The sleeve holds the inside diameter, the grip ring grabs outside – which is why the SDR must match.

Can I transition from PE to steel with it?

Yes – Gebo supplies the malleable-iron fitting as steel–PE transition from 21.3/20 to 114.3/110 mm, GF PRIMOFIT transition pieces 1/2 to 2 inch to PE 20 to 63 mm.

Does repair work with water still running?

With polygebo on PVC-C yes – that is the advantage over glueing, which needs curing time. For PE service lines the network operator’s release applies.

What about multilayer pipe?

Multilayer pipe has metal inside and plastic outside and its own diameter series (16, 20, 26, 32 mm) – Multigebo is built for that, not the PE fitting.
