Push-fit systems · GF iFIT · Project

Can I lay a garden water line with a push-fit system?

Yes – as a cold-water line: from the house connection a transition module leads to d20 or d25 pipe from the coil, laid in conduit or frost-free, and at the end there is a transition module with female thread for the tap or the ball valve. Two things decide how much joy you get from it: the frost rule and the backflow preventer.

The plan

The start is a connection in the house – basement or garage, with shut-off valve and drain. From there the pipe runs outside by the shortest route: above ground in conduit (and protected from daylight), knee-deep in the bed, or frost-free below the frost line. Pipe from the coil makes long runs possible without intermediate joints – every joint that does not exist cannot leak. At every tap the line ends in a transition module with female thread.

The steps

  1. Starting point in the house: provide a shut-off valve with drain – so the line can be emptied before winter.
  2. Set the transition: iFIT transition module onto the thread of the house connection.
  3. Lay the run: d20 or d25 pipe from the coil, laid in conduit or frost-free; changes of direction with an elbow module or a hand bend within the permissible radius.
  4. Set the taps: one transition module with female thread per tap, with a draw-off valve or ball valve on it – with a backflow preventer at the tap.
  5. Pull-back test and leak test, only then backfill or clad.

Every action in detail: step-by-step installation.

What you need

One transition module per connection to the existing installation and per tap, one elbow module per change of direction, pipe length equals run plus 10 % reserve, one adapter per push point – and with the first order the tool set (belongs to every first order according to the manufacturer; we include it in the enquiry). The exact list is worked out by the parts-list tool.

The limits of this project

Frost: if water stands in the line and freezes, pipe and modules can be damaged – the line is drained before winter or lies frost-free below the frost line. Daylight: the composite pipe does not belong permanently in the sun – conduit or cover. Drinking water in the garden: a backflow preventer belongs at the tap so that nothing from hose or rain barrel gets back into the house installation.

When another route is better

For long runs in the ground – to the garden shed, for irrigation across the plot – PE pressure pipe with compression couplings is the usual solution: inexpensive pipe from the reel, suitable for burial, long lengths. How that works is shown in the section joining without welding.
